Fundraiser Planned for May

This project, of course, needs some seed money.  The City of Morgantown has come forward with some support, and the Green Space Coalition is sponsoring the effort and providing non-profit status so that all donations will be tax deductible. More is needed to get started.  Please contact me about your support (not just financial, but any support you can offer, including encouragement) to help:

  • Buy a boat large enough to collect all the litter along the banks from the river front in Morgantown to Hildebrand Lock and Dam on both sides of the river (Update: The 28 foot pontoon boat The Monongahela Monitor has been purchased and will undergo a shakedown on April 29!)
  • Put the vessel into service this year in an ongoing program to eliminate trash along the banks and to reduce the build up behind the Morgantown Lock and Dam
  • Establish a platform to educate young people about our river and how citizens can have an impact on their communities
  • Show that we are serious about solving the problem of litter in our river and serve as a starting point to grow a program that could be a national example such as that begun on the Mississippi by Chad Pregracke (see Living Lands and Water below). It will take time and lots of effort to get the trash out of the river: The sooner we stop talking about it a begin removing trash, the better. This will begin the process of finding permanent solutions through partnerships and positive momentum.
