Building appreciation for the Monongahela and working toward a clean river.

Educational Component

If the solution outlined in "A Solution" seems too simple, remember that simple approaches to a problem are often best. However, the fact is that picking up the litter is not really the entire solution. It addresses the symptom, but not the disease: that people are littering our roads and waters.

This is why there's an educational component to the Monongahela River Revival Project. Young people volunteer to take part in the cleanup as "Monongahela River Monitors," and gain by learning about the river environment and grow to be more responsible citizens through their participation.  These Monitors document their experiences in photographs and essays about the river and what they accomplished. Then they use the material as a science project or other means to convey to other students how littering is damaging to our natural resources. This is the long-term goal of the project and, perhaps, the most important.

Goals of Educational Component:

  • Reduce littering by having young people become engaged with the river environment to help clean it up
  • Reduce littering by having Monongahela River Monitors present their experiences to classmates in schools
  • Help young people become aware of how they can have an impact on their society and community and build skills toward that end
  • Revival Home
