Building appreciation for the Monongahela and working toward a clean river.
The photos show trash collected by Missy Westbrook, Jennie Terman, Maureen Terman and Tim Terman on July 31. That was Tim's birthday and his family asked what he'd like to do that day and -- well, he asked for a litter clean up! This was collected in just about one hour - four stuffed kayaks - all from the area above the dam, but not right behind the dam, which is prohibited and restricted access. The flow of water through the dam has been very slack since June, and often the trash has, with just a little breeze from the north, been blown back upstream and deposited along the bank. If we don't get the trash up before the first heavy rain of the fall, it will all pile up behind the dam. But this is all we could do in one day with kayaks. It's a start, but the frustrating part is that there is lots more up there.
